Multiselect and context menu
The project’s item lists support selecting multiple items at once:
- Main lists: geometry elements, variables, functions, materials, physics sets, physics, interactions, regions, override sets, extra input files, meshes, and simulations.
- Sub-lists of a mesh: mesh customizations and mesh overrides.
- Sub-lists of a simulation: inputs, outputs, visualizations, visualization filters, and plots.
Build a selection with the mouse and keyboard, then right-click it to duplicate, move, or delete every selected item together, or drag the selection to reorder or group it.
Building a selection
Section titled “Building a selection”- Select an item: Click the item. This selects just that item and opens its settings panel, replacing any existing selection.
- Add or remove one item: Hold Ctrl (Cmd on macOS) and click an item to add it to the current selection. Ctrl+click a selected item again to remove it from the selection.
- Select a range: Click an item, then hold Shift and click another item to select everything between the two, inclusive.
Selecting groups
Section titled “Selecting groups”A group is selected together with all of its items, so a group is never selected with some of its items missing:
- Ctrl+click a group header to select or deselect the group and all of its items.
- Ctrl+click an item inside a selected group does nothing. To deselect the item, deselect the whole group.
- Shift+click treats a group as a whole when the range includes the group’s header, or when you click the group or one of its items from outside the group.
- Shift+click between two items of the same group stays inside that group and selects only the items in the range, not the whole group.
If a group’s settings panel is open when you start a selection with Ctrl+click or Shift+click, the group and all of its items are included in the selection.
Clearing a selection
Section titled “Clearing a selection”Press Escape, or click anywhere outside the list, to clear the current selection.
One selection per panel
Section titled “One selection per panel”The left navigation and the right-side common sidebar (variables, functions, override sets, regions, extra input files) each keep their own selection:
- Within a panel, only one list holds a multiselection at a time. Starting a new selection in a different list of the same panel clears the previous one. The sub-lists of each mesh and simulation count as separate lists.
- Across panels, selections coexist. Selecting items in the left navigation doesn’t clear a selection in the common sidebar, and the reverse is also true.
Context menu
Section titled “Context menu”Right-click an item to open its context menu:
- Right-click a selected item when two or more items are selected to open the menu for the whole selection. The menu title shows how many items are selected, for example 3 items selected, and every action applies to all of them.
- Right-click any other item to open the menu for that item only. This clears the current multiselection.
- Right-click a group header to open the menu for the group.
The menu shows only the actions that are available for the items it targets. If none are available, it shows No available actions. Changing the selection while the menu is open closes it.
The context menu is not available in read-only projects. In the geometry elements list, it’s available only while the model editor is in Edit mode.
Available actions per list
Section titled “Available actions per list”Main lists
Section titled “Main lists”| List | Duplicate | Move | Delete |
|---|---|---|---|
| Variables, functions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Materials, meshes, simulations | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Interactions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Override sets, regions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Extra input files | — | Yes | Yes |
| Geometry elements (in Edit mode) | Yes | — | Yes |
| Physics sets | Yes | — | — |
| Physics within a set | — | — | Yes |
- Duplicate creates a copy of each item with a new, unique name.
- Move opens a menu where you choose the group to move the items into, or the top level of the list. It’s shown only when the list contains at least one group.
- Delete is shown only when at least one of the items can be deleted. See Deleting items that are in use.
Some items can’t be duplicated or moved:
- Items that haven’t been saved yet can’t be duplicated or moved.
- Regions without a region rule can’t be duplicated.
- Imported geometry files can’t be duplicated. Duplicate is disabled if the selection contains one.
If any item in a selection can’t be duplicated, Duplicate is hidden for the whole selection.
Right-click a group header for these actions:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Duplicate | Copies the group together with its items. |
| Ungroup | Removes the group and moves its items to the parent level. Shown only when the group has items. |
| Delete | Deletes the group together with all of its items, after confirmation. |
Ungroup and Delete are also available from the menu in the group’s settings panel header.
When a multiselection contains groups, the available actions are Duplicate and Delete. Move is not available for a selection that contains a group.
Mesh and simulation sub-lists
Section titled “Mesh and simulation sub-lists”| Sub-list | Duplicate | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh customizations | — | Yes |
| Mesh overrides | — | Yes |
| Simulation inputs | — | Yes |
| Simulation outputs | Yes | Yes |
| Visualizations | — | Yes |
| Visualization filters | — | Yes |
| Plots | Yes | Yes |
- When a simulation is locked, its inputs and outputs can’t be deleted. Outputs can still be duplicated.
- A visualization filter can be deleted only together with the filters that depend on it. Select the dependent filters too, otherwise Delete is not shown.
- Deleting visualizations that have filters asks for confirmation, because their filters are deleted as well.
Deleting items that are in use
Section titled “Deleting items that are in use”Deleting a selection doesn’t ask for confirmation when every selected item can be deleted, the same as deleting a single item from its settings panel.
Variables, functions, regions, and override sets can’t be deleted while other items still use them. Usages by other items in the same selection don’t count, so you can delete an item together with the items that use it.
If part of the selection is still in use, a confirmation dialog lists the items that can’t be deleted and how many items use each of them. Select Delete unused items to delete everything else and keep the items in use. Items in use that belong to a deleted group are moved to the parent level.
Deleting a group from its context menu or settings panel always asks for confirmation, because all of its items are deleted with it.
Reordering and grouping by dragging
Section titled “Reordering and grouping by dragging”In the main lists, drag any item that is part of the current selection to move the whole selection together:
- Drop it onto a group header to move the whole selection into that group.
- With
Custom order, drop it between two items to reorder the selection within the list.
Dragging is disabled when a group is part of the selection. Move the items inside a group individually instead.
